We started our pre-service prayer and I asked if he wanted to help Pastor Joel on stage. Without blinking an eye, he gave an affirmative yes. I nodded in the direction of the stairs and without hesitation, he proceeded to march confidently up the stage. He was a boy on a mission. Nothing could have stopped him.

Then before a crowd of the most amazing leaders and volunteers, he started hosting the presence of God. Yet to him, there seemed like there was little special about it. After all, He’s done this countless times at home when it was just him and the Holy Spirit. Maybe.

I wonder what the Holy Spirit told him. Because Pastor Joel wasn’t singing. But Josh was. He went… “Open up our eyes surround us with your light your love endures forever.” And at that moment, Angela prayed for the God of angel armies to surround us. That we might open up our eyes to see the light and love that surrounds us by His Spirit and angels.

One of the sayings that we have in our church family is that we don’t just believe in the potential of our children, we believe that they can make an impact today. As Josh played on his modern day harp, there was an elevation in the atmosphere, a shift in the spiritual temperature. The Psalmist wrote “Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.” It was amazing. And I’m not just saying this because he’s my son. Ok that is why I’m saying this. But still, it was so awesome and you should have been there.

As I look back at what unfolded, my heart is full knowing that we are known and loved by God who sees our hopes and dreams. I am thankful for a church family who does not belittle the gifts and the passion of the little children. I am grateful for a people who is humble to let a 3 year old lead them into the presence of God.

Most of all, I’m excited for our next praise practice that happens in his little room with Woody and Buzz Lightyear.

During my time with the Praise Band, I learnt what it meant to worship God even in life-wrecking situations. The fundamental essence of worship, regardless of any negative circumstances or emotional turmoil, is to surrender your life, issues and heart before God. A great example would be the lives of Abraham and Job, who worshipped in the midst of the most life-shattering circumstances.

Worship comes from the heart and in that lies a beautiful connection with God and the Holy Spirit which overflows into our playing that is transformed into music. Serving as a musician for the past 15 years has been an immense honour. What sets us apart from musicians in the secular world is that we do it as a service unto God.

All these years, I have been well-trained technically. In 3:16 Praise, I am not only the resident electric guitarist but also a utility player, moving between the drums, bass and acoustic guitar. I also train the younger musicians and assist the worship leaders in technical aspects and help out in directing the band and sound aspect. The praise band is a young team and I felt that I have a lot to contribute to the team.

This, however, has been a struggle. Unknowingly, I lost touch with the true meaning of serving, the ability to listen to the heartbeat of God and what it means to truly worship. With that, came the downfall. Pride got in the way and it hit me real hard. But God never fails. As much as I took a hiatus from Him, He never failed to remind me of His love and the true meaning behind serving Him.

Pride is arguably the most deadly and the root of all sins. It was probably Satan’s original sin when he said, “I will make myself like the Most High” in Isaiah. Likewise, it ate into me. I wanted to be recognised for what I have done for the team. It was for my personal glory. I then began to realise that ministry has been exhausting me. I just wanted to give up. I was depending a lot on my own strength and what I had been trained for. Until one day, God spoke to me in his Word. He reminded me of John’s motto in John 3:30, ‘He must become more important while I become less important.’ As simple as it seems, it brought me back to learning what humility in God’s eyes is. It stems from understanding who God is and who we are. I understood what God’s sovereignty is but I have inflated views on myself. I forgot what it was like to first be a worshipper. God reminded me that day to align my heart with His and that He should take the highest honour. With this, He is to be exalted.

I am thankful to Rei, to Marc, who sat me down one Sunday and asked, “Would you like to play the acoustic guitar for the Conference?” My heart leapt. The initial response that surfaced in my mind was, oh, good Lord, no. The subsequent response as they peered intently at me was, perhaps… maybe… yes. I can’t bear to say no to their sincerity. The heavens must have a purpose. This feels like a call to action.

Saying yes was akin to wearing my heart on strings in the public eye. I grew up a reclusive and shy child, where I carefully stored my inner world behind a fortress of storybooks, dollhouses, writing and piano; if you realise, they are solitary activities. Teachers often wrote in my report card, “Stephanie needs to speak up”, or “Stephanie needs to come out of her shell”. To tie this back to my journey as a musician, this followed me in part to adulthood, and I had spent 6 prior years in the closet (or quiet time) singing into space. Bible, guitar and I. I was supremely comfortable and it was my fortress. Quite suddenly, however, my closet’s door was flung wide open by a single question on a balmy Sunday afternoon.

It felt as if Heaven’s hotline rang, and I picked up the phone. It was Christ calling me to serve His people with all my heart on display, no less, for He does not like half-baked love.

I will not go into minute details of my Conference experience, though know this: Jesus showed up, and the praise band had a whirlwind of a time sustained by prayer, kopi, grace towards each other, and Subway sandwiches hurriedly devoured for lunch. When He walked into the room and sat down at the front row each time, it was enough to redeem bleary eyes and calloused fingertips.

I will be first to admit that the post-Conference journey is an ongoing mind(e)-field of apprehension and insecurity as a musician. What sustains me though? The fact that He will walk into the room. The fact that He delights in using unqualified people. The fact that brokenness is a sweet sound to His ears. The fact that the praise band’s music is only an entry point to ushering His presence, while the congregation’s collective voice carries it to fruition.

From this unqualified person to another who may feel the same – join the club, and take the road less travelled with Jesus Christ. I love how Matthew 7:14 so aptly reads, “But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” The journey will be a squeeze and our feet may slip; yet once we find Life, our doors will stay wide open to all He has to offer, the author and finisher of our faith.

In this year’s National Prophecy Conference I was privileged to serve as the overall worship coordinator. One of my roles included representing 3:16 Church to liaise with the different bands for them to lead various praise segments of the sessions. Acting on our desire to partner closely with other churches, we managed to invite and have a total of four bands to partner us by serving on the worship-leading platform: they were from New Destiny Church, Cornerstone Community Church, Kum Yam Methodist Church as well as our own 3:16 Church praise band.

We also had the opportunity to serve with Pastor Pete Nelson from Calvary Chapel, with him leading in a couple of praise segments on the last day and I am grateful that I could personally be on stage to serve alongside him.

What a delight it was! Not just for the fact that I had learnt a great deal from the different bands that came with regards to the technical aspects (being a musician and worship leader myself) but my heart was overwhelmed by how God divinely orchestrated the whole process from start to end.

It was God who allowed us to link us up with the different worship leaders and bands and them agreeing to come alongside to serve with us at a relatively short notice.

It was God who brought in the different representatives from the various bands to gather together to pray and minister to one another on a Tuesday night one week prior to the conference.

And finally, it was also God who caused the powerful execution of respective roles during the conference right up to the very last day!

I am sure it sounded less “divine” to you as you read this than it actually was, but I am telling you as someone who was in the front row seat of witnessing how God pulled us through different challenges and uncertainties and showed Himself faithful.

One of the most significant “God-did-it” encounters was how God resolved for us the situation we had for the last day of the conference.

I went to the conference on the first day not knowing what’s the worship “plan” for the last day. We actually did not have any band that was ready to serve on the last day until second day into the conference!

Our plan was not to go around trying to seek out for bands to “fill the gap” but to let God orchestrate for us the last day and He really did.

None of us expected Pete Nelson (an extremely seasoned and anointed worship leader and musician) to show up at the conference. He arrived in Singapore only a few days prior to the conference and it was almost on that day that he arrived that we realised he would actually be at the conference and serve as a worship leader. We only managed to gather the team for a quick practice during one of the breaks of the second day yet in His grace, God used the team powerfully for the third day sessions.

Can I tell you the most amazing part? At some point when I realised that it would be good to have a full band on the last night (which was not formed up at the start of the conference), I went around looking for band members. What was placed on my heart was for a band that comprise of different churches and ministries. Within the three days, God brought in a bassist from New Destiny Church, a keyboardist from 3:16 church, and only in the morning of the very last day, a drummer from Cornerstone Community Church.

Throughout the last day of the conference, although a part of me was felt relieved and thankful that God had gathered the band members for the final session and believed God to see things through, yet I also had this uneasy feelings – uncertainty coupled with fear, not being sure of how things would turn out for the night, afraid it would turn out bad. After all, the people who are coming to serve together on the final night had no experience of working together as a band before.

This uneasiness was elevated when I realise we only had half an hour of practice before we would have to exit the stage and come back on later for the actual session.

It did not help also when I broke the guitar string of the guitar (the one which we had been using for the conference) on the last day while leading worship with it and eventually had to settle for what was previously advised by a friend (a seasoned sound engineer) “not to use”.

I wish I could tell you that we had the most fruitful half-an-hour practice as a newly-formed team but that didn’t happen. We actually faced some trouble communicating to one another on stage and we didn’t manage to practise through all the songs.

At the end of the practice in my mind I remember thinking: am I acting on some reckless faith here? God help us!

I was glad we prayed before we went up on stage. During that prayer time, I felt God filling me with confidence and God knitting our hearts as a team through His Spirit. At least one thing was made clear in my heart, we were all there to worship God with our all and believing Him to move powerfully through us or in spite of us.

So God did move. His Presence swept through the room powerfully and hearts were opened to receive more of Him. And I am not just saying this based on what I experienced but from a number of people that came to speak to me about it as well.

God showed me one thing that night – the worship team is not just the people on stage but also those off stage. The instruments used to worship God need not be just whatever that was on stage but when the Spirit is allowed to move, it comprised that of the voices of the entire congregation of believers. It was when hearts were broken and contrite before God and desiring Him earnestly, that’s what pleases Him most!

I am not sharing my experiences here with any intention to suggest that adequate planning is not required or technicalities of musicianship etc. are not important. In fact, it is quite the opposite. There was much work and effort put into this conference and personally for me, there was really much thought and effort put into certain technical aspects (which was not so emphasised here).

What I want to make loud and clear here is that this God we trust and believe in is an awesome God. He is the Faithful One who is able to do much more than we can ever imagine or conceive of on our own. He is so good that He does deserve each of our very best, the best we can offer Him.

I believe what God is after is not just excellent outward presentations (definitely not us striving for that kind of success) but completely surrendered hearts who love Him with everything.

To love Him with all our hearts, that every one of our motives is centred on Him and His desires.

To love Him with all our souls, that every emotion and consciousness to be made aware of Him.

To love Him with all our minds, that every thought that goes through our minds is set and aligned to Him.

To love Him with all our strength, that every ability that we have is used to please Him.

Let’s seek to love Him like this everyday and seek His Kingdom first together!

The idea of writing this song came to me while I was attending Hillsong Conference this year. During the conference, God spoke to me about His call for me to write songs for the church and at the same time the pastors of 3:16 Church also had a confirmation from God about the theme of this year’s church camp which is “Thy Kingdom Come”. That kind of birthed forth the desire to write a song based on “Thy Kingdom Come”, something that would resonate His heart and what He desires for His people to lay hold of in this camp.

It was quite a journey for me in writing this song because to me the theme “Thy Kingdom Come” is really quite an abstract idea in my mind, and I felt it was difficult to express out in words, what more in a song.

The first thing that came to my mind was the words of Jesus prayer in Matthew 6:9-10, “Abba in heaven, holy is Your name, Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven…Yours is the Kingdom…forever”, which eventually formed the pre-chorus and the chorus of the song.

I wanted the song to be sung as a prayer that the sons and daughters of God bring before their Abba, and a part of the chorus where we could declare in unison God’s everlasting Kingdom, just as how Jesus ended His prayer in Matthew 6.

The verses of the song are written to support and give meaning to what would be prayed in the pre-chorus and chorus of the song.

The first verse talks about our identification with being the sons and daughter of God, parallel to saying “Our Father” in the Lord’s prayer, and with this amazingly privileged status, we draw close to know God and His heart’s desires. I believe one big clue of what’s in his heart is in his eyes, as was described in the book of Revelation, to be “like blazing fire”. An unimaginable passion for His people. I felt it was in that place of catching what’s on God’s heart that we could really pray those words “Thy Kingdom Come” the way Jesus would.

The second verse describes what I believe are the ways that God wants to work in the Church first in answer to the prayer for His Kingdom to come. First it is unity amongst God’s people. As God’s people choose to unite in the love of God today, there would be an unprecedented power that brings about healing and restoration not just for people in the church, but for every nation. And the second thing is a discernment of the times and seasons. I believe to pray for God’s Kingdom to come is to also call for a greater sense of urgency and readiness for the church to obey God where it’s needed for Him to move through us in this generation.

The bridges are supposed to bring the song to another level where it goes from a congregational prayer and declaration to a dedication of lives in response to God’s personal revelation to us as we pray.

What I am believing God for in this camp is essentially what has been depicted in the song, that sons and daughters would be drawn in deeper into the love of Abba God, and as we get glimpses of what God’s heart is for, each one might have a deeper conviction to accomplish what God has called us to do personally and corporately, and that His Kingdom would come and be advanced in power from this camp!

Jesus replied, “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from Me, for My Father has given them to Me, and He is more powerful than anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand.” – John 10:28-29 NLT

God is true to His promise. A year later, a miracle happened. I was playing at the playground and someone from a neighbouring church invited me to a Children’s’ party. That Christmas eve, God gave me my first spiritual family. I was 10 years old.

Today, I am blessed with a family of my own – my wife and my 18 month old son. This will be his second Christmas and since he is older and a lot more active now, this year’s Christmas is filled with lots more activities.

We were headed out one afternoon and a Christmas song was playing in my sister’s car. It was a beautiful song, but the melody was really solemn. I thought to myself “Christmas is a time of celebration. The bible says there was a great celebration in the heavenly host! If so, should not all on earth be rejoicing over the birth of One who is here to redeem us?”

“At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God’s praises, “Glory to God in the heavenly heights, Peace to all men and women on earth who please Him.” – Luke 2:13-14 MSG

And that’s when I thought to myself, “Why not write our own Christmas song? But Christmas was just 5 weeks… “

What’s impossible with man, is possible with God. He gave me the chorus of the song that night. The God of miracles, gave me a song about miracles. That said, with only a chorus, the song was far from complete and so I simply assumed the song would be ready only for next Christmas, not this.

God started to shape the song bit by bit. I had a meeting with Pastor Ian and he shared about how 3:16 Creative was working on a Christmas video. More inspiration came and I now had a melody and a couple of lines. This was late November.

Following week, the leadership team had a meeting. As I was sitting there listening to our Christmas service theme “Together – This is family, this is love”, God stitched up the rest of the missing pieces of the song in my heart and it was gradually completed.

“This is a miracle” is a song for and about 3:16 Church. Many of us come from incomplete family units, including my wife and me. But that doesn’t stop Church from being our family. 3:16 Church comprises of people of all ages and nationalities. Though we may come from different backgrounds, we can be knitted as one family because of God’s love.

You are the reason, for the season. Jesus came so that we may become a family. Here in 3:16 Church, we will always welcome you to join us and be a part of the 3:16 family.

A good example of The Takeover vision has been the youth band, or The Takeover Band. The band is made up of young musicians and worshippers who practice throughout the year. Every 6 weeks, it’s the band’s turn to take the stage and lead the Church into a time of worshipping Jesus.

This year the band included our three lovely and beautiful female vocalists Jia Wen, Roslina and Amelia. Our zany fashion coordinator/guitarist/sound engineer/vocalist Joseph. “Cool Cat” Shannen, our lead guitarist. Awesome rhythm section, Cheryl our rock-steady bassist and “Octopus Hands” Ron, our drummer. And last but not least, Sensitive Gill who makes our sweet pad sounds on the keyboard: God has really blessed us with a pool of young and talented musicians.

Time after time, we learnt we needed to first tune our hearts to Jesus before tuning any kind of music.

Looking back in 2014, the band has really grown musically and spiritually. For us, the term “Takeover” took on an added special meaning. One of the key lessons we learnt is that worship is much more than playing music. It is so easy for Christian musicians to come together and make music and totally miss out on worshipping Jesus, which is the offering of our praise, attention, music, essentially our whole being to Jesus. Without this element of worship, the act of making music remains simply in the physical realm; the process, challenges and results are all physical ones. However, in order to worship Jesus in spirit and truth, worshippers must move past the physical into the spiritual. Time after time, we learnt we needed to first tune our hearts to Jesus before tuning any kind of music. Praying and seeking God, asking God to fill us with His Holy Spirit, was always a much better use of time than simply going straight into rehearsals. Even if we dedicated more time than planned to prayer, we learnt that more good things can happen by “accident” when we were filled and led by His Spirit than when we try to execute best laid plans without His filling and leading; we learnt that for us to be used effectively, we NEED God to “Takeover”.

As we move forward, one of the prayers of our band is that God would move us from glory to glory. But we cannot do it without Him. In Exodus chapter 33, Moses pleads with God: “If Your presence doesn’t go with us, do not lead us up from here.” It is our prayer as well, that God would lead us the same way He led His children in the wilderness, with His clear leading and “Shekinah Glory” presence:

“By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.” – Exodus 13:21 NIV

Through our worship, we hope more and more people will come to know Jesus. We are asking God to raise up more youth in Singapore that desire a “Takeover” from Jesus. We want to see the next generation rise up, be empowered, support their local church and eventually… “Takeover”.

Many times as we serve in Church, we get tired both physically & spiritually. At AFTERGLOW, we close our physical eyes and take our spiritual rest in Jesus. In 3:16 Church, we believe that “Resting brings Blessings” and through AFTERGLOW, we are recharged to take on great plans God has for Singapore and beyond.

Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you – Isaiah 60:1 NIV

I became pregnant during my trip to Hillsong’s “No Other Name” conference in Australia earlier this year. Yes, you heard me right. It wasn’t my wife Lilis who became pregnant, it was me!

God impregnated me with His inspiration of AFTERGLOW – a time set aside to help our staff and volunteers connect with God on an intimate level. I sensed that Jesus wanted to reveal His greater glory to our teams in 3:16 Church and we needed to make sure we intentionally “saved-the-date” for Him.

I was excited with God’s latest revelation to me and was absolutely delighted when I heard that God had been leading Pastor Norman and Dawn, one of our prayer warriors in the same direction too. We sought the Lord for another 3 months and truly felt convicted that our ministries needed time together with Jesus out of the usual Sunday service – AFTERGLOW was officially born on Friday, 3rd October 2014.

Without a doubt, our first AFTERGLOW was the most exciting thing that has happened to me since returning from Hillsong conference. As people came both as individuals and representing various ministries, there was a powerful convergence of hearts and spirit that evening. We were united as a body of Christ and that brought about a burst of freshness to our worship and a revival in our hearts. That evening’s worship leader, Joseph and his band of musicians did an amazing job creating a beautiful symphony of praise to the hearts of 3:16 Church.

The worship experience was so impactful that as I praised Him, I found myself imagining that I was with the disciples on the Mount of Transfiguration when Jesus shone radiantly before His inner core of disciples. I felt a sense of closeness to Jesus like never before, just like how the disciples must have felt.

Jesus took Peter and the brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain. His appearance changed from the inside out, right before their eyes. Sunlight poured from his face. His clothes were filled with light. – Matthew 17:1, 2 MSG

In the mid section of AFTERGLOW, Pastor Norman took us on an awesome 3:16 Church flashback. We started off by taking a time machine and recapped on how Jesus has grown 3:16 Church over the last 1.5years. We started as a humble house church with a handful of members sitting on the living room floor and today we average 100 regulars each week.

Not only did our congregation grow, our ministries grew too. We had an awesome time of celebration as every ministry was counted, every volunteer honored and every act of service not forgotten. In 3:16 Church, we believe that how we love and treat our volunteers is and should be a reflection of Christ’s love for us. Encouragement, love, joy and faith filled the room that evening as we saw how Jesus loved us and walked with us every step of the way.

For my message, God gave me a word to share about His imminent return and to encourage our teams to remember the reason behind our service. Indeed, God has given 3:16 Church the vision to “Ignite our world with His overwhelming love” and that our time to act is now! Singapore is our immediate harvest field.

We will bring our Private Faith to Public Square!

As the evening grew late and just when I thought we had already experienced the highlight for the night, God continued to amaze me as He led us into a time of prayer. We saw many people re-dedicating their lives to Jesus while others prayed for each other. Some needed miracles, others sought for healing and some were heavy hearted for the salvation of their loved ones. While needs varied, the sweet underlying tone was the quiet and confident assurance that God answers prayers.

The night came to a close as God led Pastor Sam to pray for our leaders and through his public prayer, it was obvious that Jesus also met with him. The grace of God was evidently overflowing in their personal encounter. Indeed, God is real, He is here and He is good.

I am extremely thankful to Jesus for 3:16 Church’s first AFTERGLOW. For me, it was nothing short of a mountain top experience!

I hope this simple and honest write-up has encouraged your heart. It surely doesn’t do justice to the real deal, you simply have to come and experience it for yourself. Our next AFTERGLOW is happening on the 5th of December and we hope to see you there!

Starting 3:16 Church in Singapore has been one of the most daunting tasks I have embarked on. Yet at the same time, it has also been the most gratifying adventure because Jesus Christ has filled my heart every step of the way. At the beginning of the year, God gave me a personal promise from Psalm 18:29 in which He revealed to me that 2013 would be a powerful year of advancement for the church.

With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. – Psalm 18:29 NIV

This promise has been the North Star for 3:16 Church. It served as our guide as faced both opportunities and challenges in 2013. It ensured that everything we did was rooted in our vision to ignite the world with God’s overwhelming love.

One of my personal highlights on this journey was to witness Jesus saving people. I think of many of our church members such as Amanda, Jia Xhin, Leonard, Austen, Max, Amy, Amelia, Raine, Chester and many more (sorry I can’t name everyone) who have accepted Jesus Christ in the past year and my heart is simply overwhelmed with joy! Praise God for the gift of salvation and for using 3:16 Church to impact lives! We want to claim His promise that more people in Singapore will be saved!

As we move into 2014, I believe this new year will be a year of “Greater” for the church. Despite our humble size and beginnings, I believe God is going to use 3:16 Church to impact our world in ways beyond our own imagination!

In the blockbuster movie “The Fellowship of the Rings”, Galadriel, the beautiful Elvish queen (played by Cate Blanchett) said this of Frodo, the tiny, little Hobbit, “even the smallest person can change the course of history.” And as we know, Frodo went about to defeat the greatest evil and fulfilled his destiny as the ring bearer.

In a similar fashion, I believe that 3:16 Church will defeat the enemy of this world and fulfil our destiny to impact our world for Jesus Christ!

On a macro level, I believe 2014 will be a year of greater love, joy, unity, healing, obedience and above all a greater fulfilment of the Great Commission for all Christian churches in Singapore.

With this, I would like to invite you to join us as we take steps of audacious faith to embrace a year of Greater as we reach the world for God’s glory!

Dear Heavenly Father,

We praise you for Jesus Christ who came to die for our sins and rose again to give us eternal life. As we enter a new year, we pray for unity amongst the churches in Singapore and for all to have a greater understanding of your love and power.

We pray that 3:16 Church will be able to fulfil our destiny in bringing the lost to Jesus Christ and that we will actively participate in disciple making for your Kingdom. This year, we believe that we will witness more salvations of our loved ones because you have promised a year of greater for us!
